How to calculate sales tax
Add sales tax
Multiply the price by the rate, then add it on. The formula is Total = Price × (1 + Rate ÷ 100).
Remove sales tax
Back the tax out of a total you already paid. Price = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the purchase price by the sales tax rate written as a decimal. For example, $100 at an 8% rate is $100 × 0.08 = $8 in tax, for a $108 total. Enter your amount and rate above to do it instantly.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For a $108 total at 8%, the pre-tax price is $108 ÷ 1.08 = $100. Switch the calculator to 'Remove tax' to back it out automatically.
Which states have no sales tax?
Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon (the 'NOMAD' states). Alaska and Montana still allow some local sales taxes.
Why is the rate different from my receipt?
These are population-weighted state averages. Your local city, county, or district can charge a different rate, so the exact total depends on the ZIP code. Edit the rate field for your precise local rate.
